Identity Theft and LifeLock

by on 08/21/2007

Last week I wrote about a scam that could sucker you out of 50 bucks but this week I am going to talk about the greatest possible scam out there, Identity Theft. 457-55-5462 You may recognize this number as the Social security number of the Lifelock CEO Todd Davis. They are the innovative identity theft protection site that is ROCKING THE INDUSTRY. Their shtick is that they are so confident in their service that they are willing to publish the CEO’s SSN.

What’s the process?
This is how it works, Lifelock ask the credit bureaus to set fraud alerts on your behalf. This is done through their automated systems and the alerts are set within an hour. These fraud alerts last for about 90 days, and then they proactively go in and update the system at about the 80th day and reset the process again.

I have been using the Equifax protection service for years and once I knew that there was an alternative out here that is not just a reporting engine but is actually proactive about my identity protection I just had to give it a try. Let me give you an example, if someone is down at Sears and is applying for credit with your social security number, one will block prior to approval and the other would notify you that a new account has been established.

Learn about Lifelock

They also order your credit reports from all three major agencies mailed directly to you once a year. If you are interested in a 30 Day trial and a whopping $21 discount, enter in promo code AMI when you enroll. I have been using the service for about 90 days and I have received my Fraud Alter paperwork from Trans Union and Equifax, so I know that they have done what they have promised. I anticipate getting another set of letters within the next 60 days to confirm that my fraud alert has been renewed. I LOVE THIS SERVICE. Yes, I know that I could do it myself but for less than $10 a month, I would prefer to have someone follow up on this for me so that I can focus on writing interesting newsletters and not writing to get my identity back!

FAST FACTS:

  • Identity Theft is the fastest growing crime in America
  • More than 27 million identities have been stolen
  • More than 15 million identities will be stolen this year
  • You are 25 times more likely to have your identity stolen than to have your car broken into.
  • You are 40 times more like to have your identity stolen than your home broken into.
  • It takes consumers an average of 177 hours and two years to restore their identities after it has been stolen.

One of my favorite features of the services is the removal from pre-approved credit card and junk mail lists and they keep updating these requests as they expire. Discarded mail or stolen mail is one of the most common ways that thieves hijack identities.

The Guarantee
If your Identity is misused while you are our client, we’ll spend up to $1,000,000 to make it right. I have been a client for a while, and I have yet to receive that dredged phone call that someone is trying to open up an account with my name, but I have done my due diligence and I feel comfortable that I am really protected.
If you don’t think this is a problem, take a look at these news articles just from August.

Consider signing your parents up for this service even if you don’t need it. This article written today states that 20% of Identity Theft happens to Senior citizens.

Stay informed, because once you are it is easy to get protected.

Brad,

I appreciate your endorsement of Lifelock, just have a couple of quick questions for you. Have you googled Lifelock lately? Are you aware that Robert Maynard, the founder and CEO(formerly) is actually a convicted ID Thief? I say formerly, because once the news article broke he “stepped” down. Are you also aware that right now the Arizona AG is investigating Lifelock as they have no way to back their $1 million guarantee, 7 people have filed and have yet to receive a penny, know why, nobody has underwritten that $1 million guaranty!! I think you should do a little more research, there is plenty out there on Lifelock. Then maybe go look at PrePaid Legal and Identity Theft Shield. It is on the NYSE as PPD. You might want to look at the front page of the Money section of today’s USA Today. Happy reading!!!!

I have seen the google responses and the traffic about him. I did not see anything about people that have made claims about the service for the 1 Million and not getting their issues resolved, so I would be interested in learning a little more about this..

Thanks for the info.

While I appreciate the fact that people have reported they have had Lifelock for a period of time and they have yet to get the notice that someone is trying to open credit in their name, that’s wonderful! It’s also really interesting that the CEO has the guts to put his social security number out there for all the identity thieves to see and although he may not yet have become a victim of identity theft (credit wise) what about the other 4 areas??

You say what 4 other areas of identity theft? While these 4 other areas are not reported to your credit bureau they are still considered identity theft and can cause you great problems in life.

There is social security id theft, someone using your SS# to get 1099 jobs in your name and not paying the taxes and it not catching up with you for a few years and then the IRS comes knocking, saying you owe so & so in back taxes for jobs you never held!
There is drivers license id theft, someone gets a drivers license in another state and racks up points and may commit a crime such as a hit & run. Say you hold a CDL, this is your livelihood any points can leave you without a job and to clear up a huge mess, many have found it very difficult to fix on their own.
There is character id theft, someone gives your name after committing a crime and is let out on bail and they never show for court, you now have a warrant for your arrest and left to prove your innocence. Think about being arrested for some crime you did not commit and you’re a single parent and your kids are taken from you, put in foster care and then your released but it happens 4 or 5 times again, how do explain to your children. This has happened I am not blowing smoke around!
Finally there is medical id theft, all you need is someone’s SS#, name, and maybe an address maybe not, and now they can get medical treatment in your name. Wow this is a lot to take in but it is happening more often than you hear about because the news and articles focus on credit id theft, which accounts for only about 40% of identity theft. Consider this area of id theft very serious and life threatening as well. The person that uses you medical id has a different blood type than you and say you are admitted to the hospital unconscious and need blood, your file says one type and you are another, I don’t have to spell out the outcome!

Now I ask the very obvious question, does Lifelock cover you in all the areas of id theft, which are 5, credit being the 5th area? So if the CEO can put his SS# out there for the world to see, I hope he has all these other areas monitored and covered as well or he just might find that the identity thieves have had some fun with his name and SS# that has been deliberately put out there for them to see if they can do some damage! I also would not be comfortable signing on with a company that the CEO himself was an identity thief! I have heard this and read about it, it’s no wonder he stepped down but the words out, and now hearing that they may not be able to back their million dollar guarantee, hmm sounds fishy and they’ve only been in business a short time, less than 5 years.

I agree check out Pre-Paid Legal Services Inc. & the Identity Theft Shield, two publicly traded companies that have been in business for over 35 years back these two services. I have had my Identity Theft Shield plan for over 3 years and sleep better knowing the experts are watching my back while I sleep, I would pay my monthly fee before I ate if I ever had to make the choice, I would never be without it and you shouldn’t either! Wouldn’t you rather sign with the company that has the reputation and doesn’t have to post their CEO’s SS# for the world to see, because there is no 100% guarantee your identity will not be stolen and any company that claims there is, BEWARE and do your homework is all I can suggest!

Thank you for your time, I hope this opened a few eyes and got some of you thinking, there are other areas of identity theft and there is no 100% guarantee, and monitoring alone will not help fix the problem once it happens, you need restoration services and Identity Theft Shield offers you that!
