Mediatemple Review

02/17/2009

Sick and Tired… This describes my year long spiral into unhappiness with Mediatemple.net. Fantastic reviews online, but overall a really crappy provider. I use a service called Pingdom.com which tracks uptime of all of my domains and websites. And after checking out the stats I was so disappointed with Media Temple and their support staff that I just had to call it quits.

The Pro’s

  • Great Interface
  • Plug and Play Applications
  • Great Reputation
  • The Con’s

  • Uptime
  • Responsiveness of the staff to tickets
  • The server just felt – “sticky” sort of sluggish – slow to respond
  • I would get a page from Pingdom, letting me know the site was down – I would wait a few minutes, check and then fire off an email… I then got a reply that they were working on it. You know, it is just once to often. The other big issues was how the server would just freeze up for a few seconds, and as long as 30 seconds when I was SSH’d into the machine. I would be untaring a file, it would hang and then just sort of restart. Very frustrating.

As my brother would say “Ambitious, but Rubbish

Here is my uptime image from Pingdom, and you can see why I am leaving.

    Mediatemple sucks

    Mediatemple sucks

This may just seem like random squabbling, but I used to own (and sold) an ISP and hosting company. The reason I went to (MT) was because I wanted a managed service, with better than average performance for a fair price.

Yes, me too. I’ve been experiencing really bad service from Media Temple today. The MySQL databases have been up and down all day. The support people just reboot the server without fixing the root cause.

    Totally unsatisfactory.

Thier grid service is weak. the databases are always getting the “bad neighbor effect” as they put it. Sounds more like improperly managed resource allocation.

    I just moved off of MediaTemple to A Small Orange and talk about an instant speed increase. Once the nameservers took effect and I got my wp-config.php file uploaded (I was having some issues with a 66MB SQL file), my site was running perfectly. I just gotta set up Mint and that is it. ^_^;;

Hi, thanks for your honest review. I’m looking for a good FAST host – did you end up finding a good host, and if so who do you recommend?

After 6 years with mt (yes, 6), here’s my farewell to one of their “resolved” posts:

I am sorry, but this is simply not true. Or connecting 5 minutes to your mailserver is what you would call resolved? I know you will remove this message from here and contact me to offer some 6 months of free hosting, but don’t try it. Please. I was hosting my website on MT for I think 6 years, but it is time to close the deal.

I was good customer, I paid all my bills, I referred some people to you and what I’ve got in return? An unreliable service with more troubles and issues than Soviet spaceship? No thanks. I need my emails to work, I need my website to work or otherwise it is a waste of money and you wasted a lot of my money.

so what do you recommend instead of mt for a good grid host?

I have been using wiredtree.com and they have been great. Tech support always responds and I have not had an issue.

I’ve been using A Small Orange and they’ve been a fairly good webhost. I would highly recommend using them.
