Good topic. I get these also, and wonder how many people pay more to do the renewal. After all, it looks official.
It is also not specific to the Internet. A similar thing happens in regular mail with “Corporation registration renewal”. It must be a cottage industry. Private registration companies, with official sounding Sacramento addresses, grossly overcharge for something trivial, that any Corp can easily do directly with the Secretary of State.
